Cardiac Transplantation in Dilated Cardiomyopathy Patients

Abstract
Idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy has been defined by the World Health Organization as dilatation of the left, right, or both ventricles, with impaired systolic function of unknown cause. Over heart failure may or may not be present, arrhythmias
are
common, and the prognosis is often poor. Heart-muscle diseases of known cause, such as coronary artery disease or hypothyroidism, should be excluded. Therefore. The diagnosis of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy is made only after a complete
evaluation
for potential causes. Treatment of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy is centered on symptomatic relief. The usual cause is one of progressive decline, resulting in death or necessitating cardiac transplantation. I emphasize that close
coorperation
between cardiologist and surgeon is very important to decide when the patient should undergo cardiac transplantation.
